We follow a careful process when it comes to car upholstery restoration, making sure we take impeccable care of your car’s interior every step of the way, resulting in a perfect finished product you will be proud of. We have broken our custom interior upholstery repair service down into four stages:
Initial Assessment and Disassembly
Inspection
We will begin by undertaking a thorough inspection of your car’s interior, with a particular focus on all upholstered elements. Our experienced team will make a note of the current condition of all upholstery not just on the exterior but also the padding inside and the underlying frame on which the seats are fixed. We will be sure to take photos of the original upholstery, noting specific patterns and stitching to ensure the end result maintains the authenticity of the original.
Disassembly
Once the current upholstery has been fully inspected and documented, we will begin removing it from the interior components. Our restorers will take excellent care during this process to avoid any further damage to the interior of your car. Much of the old upholstery may be retained to be used as templates for creating the new upholstery.
Material Sourcing and Preparation
Now the upholstery has been inspected and removed, we will get to work on sourcing the ideal replacement materials. We will use our contacts to find the closest original or period-appropriate materials for your car interior, colour matching all fabrics and leathers to the original materials to provide a ‘like new’ finish in the end.
Using the original upholstered elements as a guide, we will create new patterns and cut the new material to shape. As with all steps of any classic car restoration, our team will pay meticulous attention to the patterns and shapes being cut for your car.
We will also take the time to thoroughly clean the interior of your car, especially the areas where upholstery has been removed, to ensure the new upholstery will be fixed to clean, smooth panels and frames.
Repair and Restoration Stage
Padding and Support
We will begin the actual repairs and restoration stage by forming the padding and support on which the seats are built. Damaged foam and padding will be replaced by new padding, designed to restore the seat back to the original shape and comfort. This will be aided by the repair or replacement of any broken springs and seat frames, ensuring the seat looks and feels as it did when the car first left the factory. Any padding in the door frames will also be replaced, ready to be reupholstered with new fabric.
Sewing and Stitching
Arguably the most important phase of car seat upholstery repair is the sewing and stitching phase, and the same can be said for all elements of the car’s interior being reupholstered. The new pieces of upholstery will be meticulously sewn together using our specialised sewing machines and expert techniques, using the new materials cut and the padding formed.
We will match all stitching patterns with the original stitching patterns to maintain authenticity and the period look you want for your classic car interior. Once the seats and other upholstery panels have been sewn and stitched together perfectly, they are ready for re-installation.
Re-Installation
Careful installation of the new upholstery panels completes the restoration process. The seats will be lowered into place with precision, firmly fixing the upholstered cover elements to the repairs or replaced base. We will firmly secure all new upholstery in place, whether it’s just the seats or it’s the door panels, footwells, steering wheel and interior roof. Some elements may need to be stretched or shaped during the installation phase to ensure they are fixed perfectly in the right shape and place.
Finishing Touches
Now the new upholstery is in position, we will set about completing the finishing touches that give a car’s interior that factory fresh look. Detailing is an important step, where we will clean, condition and polish the interior of your car, including the new upholstery. This will enhance its appearance and prepare it for coming use. Fine-tuning and minor adjustments can be made before we fully sign off on the complete classic car upholstery restoration.
